The journey

From boat builder's grandson to captain

  • Long Island, The Bahamas

    Learning beside a boat builder

Captain Forbes spent his first five years in Long Island, Bahamas, and grew up on several islands, including Nassau and Andros. His grandfather built boats in Long Island and took him out on the water at age three. Long before it was a profession, the water was simply where he was.

  • After high school

Working the water as a fisherman

After graduating high school, he worked as a professional fisherman for several years. He built the practical seamanship, and the skill of reading conditions, that no course can teach.

  • Over the years

    A career on the water

He went on to captain private and high-end charters throughout The Bahamas, Florida, and the Caribbean. Private vessel owners and returning visitors ask for him by name when they come back to The Bahamas.

  • Today

    1Ocean Charters

Today, he co-owns 1Ocean Charters with Tameka Forbes. Guests get the benefit of every year of his experience.

What it means for your day

Why the captain matters

Local knowledge shapes the whole day.

He knows where to go

He knows which stops are calm today, where the water is clearest, and when to move on or linger. Local knowledge is the difference between a good day and a rushed one.

He knows when not to go

Safety comes first, always. If conditions are not right, the trip does not run. That judgment comes from decades of reading these waters.

He knows the vessel

A background in marine mechanics, maintenance, and repairs means he understands the boat and cares for it.
